Diabetes is a chronic disease that causes blood sugar levels to rise higher than normal.  Diabetes affects more than 34 million people in the United States.  Diabetes has no cure, but the encouraging news is that with a little exercise and a change in diet it can often be reversed.  That is where the Shasta Family YMCA can help.

A condition called prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis.  Prediabetes is real, and it is likely to develop into Type 2 Diabetes within 5 years unless preventative action is taken.  It is estimated that half of Shasta County adults have prediabetes but do not know it.

The Shasta Family YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a lifestyle change program that has been proven to motivate and support people with prediabetes to make practical, real-life changes, and cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by more than half.  That is a big deal! 

The program is delivered over 12 months and is designed to help participants lose 7% of their body weight and increase physical activity.
