Phanh started her Camp McCumber journey as a camper back in 2015 and is now a veteran counselor returning once again this summer. Not only has Phanh had the opportunity to experience the joys of summer camp, but her two younger siblings, Cee and Pim, attend Camp McCumber annually as well. For Phanh, summer camp is more than just outdoor activities, campfire songs, and s’mores, it is a chance for her to feel like a kid again.
Phanh's family moved to Redding, California from overseas. Phanh is the designated translator for her parents, as they speak little English. She often feels the responsibility and pressure to ensure that her parents make it to their destinations safely; but during the week that she is at Camp McCumber, she feels like a kid once again. When asked why she looks forward to camp every year, Phanh explained that she has the chance to experience everything that she doesn’t normally get to at home like “creating bonds with new friends and learning about their different backgrounds”.
Here at the Y, it is our honor to be able to provide a place for youth in our community to call home for a week. At Camp McCumber, we ensure that all participants have the opportunity for positive growth, development, and the chance to embrace their childhood.
This summer, the Shasta Family YMCA's "Discover Your Y" Annual Giving Campaign is focused on providing opportunities for children and youth in our community to have their Best Summer Ever, and you're invited to join us in creating meaningful summer memories.
Our goal this summer is to provide need-based program assistance for:
15 Youth to YMCA Camp McCumber, One-Week Resident Day Camp
40 Sessions of YMCA Summer Day Camp, Week Long Enrichment Programs/span>
400 Youth for YMCA Water Safety and Swim Lessons, for All Ages and Stages
